Obituary for David Evans Stokes

David Evans  Stokes
David Evans Stokes, 94, of Lafayette Hill, passed away on September 28, 2017 at The Hill At Whitemarsh of old age.

Born December 18, 1922 in Germantown, he was married for 68 years to the love of his life Joanne Nicholas, of Chicago, IL who passed away in 2015. Surviving are his children: Colin Stokes, Robert Stokes and his wife Lee Ann; Pamela Elliott and her husband Robert, Jonathon Stokes and his wife Tommie, as well as grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

David attended Germantown Friends School and graduated from Haverford College in 1944 with a BS in Chemistry. He enlisted and served in the navy from 1944 to1946 with an honorable discharge as Electronic Technicians Mate 2nd Class. From 1946-1963, he was the general manager of F.J. Stokes Corporation. He moved on to be the director of marketing at the Pennwalt Corporation from 1963-1970. In 1970 until 1980, he worked for Extracorporeal Medical Specialties, a Johnson and Johnson company as Vice President for Marketing and Planning and Development. David assumed the position of President of the Quadrangle, A Life Care Community, Haverford, PA from 1980-1988. Additionally, in 1981, he was a Principal Management Consultant of Stokes and Associates. Lastly, from 1983-1985, David was Chairman, J. Rhoads & Sons. David also served as a trustee emeritus at Abington Memorial Hospital, Haverford College, and Teton Science School, and as trustee at St. John’s Hospital Foundation.

David was a lifelong athlete, playing varsity soccer in high school and college, where he was second team all American. Later on he enjoyed squash and tennis. David and Joanne also owned and enjoyed life at their house at Lake Paupac in Pennsylvania where they spent time with their family and friends.

In 1988, he and Joanne moved to Jackson Hole Wyoming, where they lived for 20 years before returning to Philadelphia. During that time, he enjoyed long walks with friends, mountain climbing, and horse packing and camping.

Throughout his life, David gave very generously to many varied non-profits and individuals and with very little fanfare.

A memorial service will be held at Germantown Friends School Meeting House at 11 am on Saturday, October 21, 2017.
